Education

Charlotte has North Carolina’s second largest public school system and the twentieth largest in the nation. Students attend class in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. There are also plentiful private schools. There are some great elementary schools in South Charlotte, such as Pinewood Elementary and Beverly Woods Elementary. There are also a number of middle schools to choose from, including Carmel Middle School and Charlotte Preparatory School. High schools in the area include David W. Butler High School, Olympic High School and Myers Park High School. There is a good selection of higher education in the Charlotte area as well. University of North Carolina at Charlotte is easily accessible, a few miles away in northeastern Charlotte (a.k.a. University City). Students looking for a two-year education have access to the largest community college in the Carolinas, Central Piedmont Community College, not far away in central Charlotte. There are some great private institutions in Charlotte, including Johnson & Wales University, Belmont Abbey College, Queens University of Charlotte and Johnson C. Smith University.

Recreation

Locals know Charlotte as “The City of Churches.” Christianity is the most common religion in Charlotte. There are Christians of every denomination here. People of other religions will have no problem finding places of worship either. There is a Jewish community called Shalom Park with multiple synagogues, and there are Sikh and Hindu temples as well as several mosques in the Charlotte area. Charlotte is economically booming, a home to almost 300 of the top Fortune 500 companies as well as almost 350 foreign businesses. Charlotte is a good sports city, home to the NFL’s Carolina Panthers and the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats. Some of the best golf courses in the country are in the area. There are always events going on, and there is a good selection of nightclubs in Uptown Charlotte. The local eateries are similar fare to other parts of the south.
